No Pictures Today

I'm going to have to apologize to you all for the lack of posting this week. My internet was down ALL day today, and I've been redecorating my bathroom! I'll show you some before and afters once it's finished. Right now there are some holes in the walls and nothing goes with the paint color. My bathroom is a light blue grey color. I know, I know, "Why on earth would you paint any room in the house that color?!" It was five years ago, and I knew nothing of color! Blue is one of my favorite colors, and I thought I'd never get sick of it. I guess I'm not quite sick of it, because I still have plenty of blue in my new color scheme, but the walls will be a much more neutral color! I've also been helping my grandpa move out of his old apartment into a new one, which I have to say it much nicer.

Anyway, all these silly things aside, I was on twitter the other day; and I follow Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky. She linked to another blogger's comment section. It went something like this:

Blogger: Went to a super pricey makeup shop the other day and luckily gravitated towards the only thing in my budget (nail polish). The colors are great! I bought two.
Commenter: Glad to see $30 nail polish is in your budget. Must mean business is good right? Teehee

I can't recreate the graceful perfection that was this blogger's response, but it got me thinking...
Are most girls really so envious and ridiculous that we can't just congratulate each other on a job well done? I don't know if her intention was to try to make the blogger feel guilty for buying expensive nail polish, but I felt guilty just reading the comment and I didn't even buy the polish!

I can honestly say that most of my favorite bloggers are, by my standards, very successful; but I have never envied any of them. In fact, as I followed them over the years and saw their followers increase in number, I was happy because more girls were being exposed to their wonderful ideas and their beautiful, unique perspectives. I celebrate posts that are comprised of nothing but c/o items. You have to work if you want things. Leaving passive aggressive comments on other blogs isn't going to make yours any better. Sorry for this little rant. Just had to get that off my chest!

I'll leave you with this prettiness. Picked snap dragons at the local U-Pick with mark the other day and I snapped a few pretty photos!

PB+J Smoothie

I made these delicious smoothies for breakfast yesterday, and I was so happy with how they turned out,  I wanted to share the recipe! I like that they look a little fancy, but are a playful take on a childhood sammie.
Peanut butter and jelly smoothie, two layer smoothie, bilayer smoothie, mixed drinks, blueberry smoothie, peanut butter smoothie, vegan smoothie, vegan recipes, delicious vegan drink, healthy smoothie, weight loss smoothie,

For the Peanut Butter Smoothie:
1 Banana
3 TBSP peanut butter
1-1/2 cups almond milk (I used unsweetened vanilla almond breeze)

For the Blueberry "Jelly":
1 cup frozen blueberries (feel free to use your favorite berry!)
1 cup almond milk (you might not use it all!)
Fresh Blueberries (for garnish)

Blend the peanut butter smoothie ingredients together. Make sure this part of the smoothie is not too thick. You can add more peanut butter if you want to. Pour this into your glass and set aside.

Blend the blueberry ingredients together. Don't add all the almond milk at once! Just add enough so that you get a thick, icy mixture.

If you want to get that pretty, layered look; pour the blueberry portion into the glass slowly at first then just plop the mixture in. I used a spoon to get better control of the mixture. You can add the fresh blueberries on top (or whichever fruit you used. If you use strawberries, I'd slice one so it can rest on the rim of the glass.)

Guest Post from ShyScout!

Hi everyone, I am Allison and I blog over at ShyScout! Jacqueline and I decided it would be fun to do a guest swap awhile back and we are finally getting around to it. Together we decided to do a wardrobe challenge – five items, five ways (not including shoes and accessories). I have always found it fascinating how creative people can get with these sort of challenges. It is exciting to see how your every day clothes can be transformed with a little time and effort. I will admit, when Jacqueline brought the initial idea up I was a bit nervous – how can you possibly make five outfits with five random pieces of your wardrobe? After a few trial and errors I kind of got the hang of it. Who knew that by thinking outside of the box you can create endless wardrobe possibilities?

I wanted this to be a real challenge, so I chose pieces I have only worn on a few occasions - if ever, with the exception of my blue jeans. Here we go...
ultimate outfit remix, shyscout, five items five ways, black skirt, blue skirt, shite lacey top, guest post, red American apparel leotard, pink top,
The items: 1. My favorite pair of dark wash denim from Old Navy, 2. A cream blouse with floral detailing from Urban Outfitters, 3. Thrifted turquoise blue BCBG dress, 4. Black lace Forever 21 skirt, 5. Coral leotard from American Apparel.

This was my first creation, it seemed the most logical place to start. The pink top and white bag add a fun pop to the otherwise dark outfit. I could see myself wearing this outfit out on a saturday night.

Let's be real ladies, leotards are a pain to get in and out of, so for my second look I kept the top pink. I decided to alter the blue dress and convert it into a long skirt for this look. I think this outfit would be fun to wear on a date, a picnic, or combo :] This look turned out to be my personal favorite.

Next I wanted to try the dress out on its own, but in order to keep up with the challenge I added the top. The top was a bit loose so I added a gold belt to cinch it in a bit, it made such a difference in the outfit. I also added brown boots to give it a more laid back vibe. I could see myself wearing this look as an everyday outfit.

The challenge got tough around this outfit for me. How to wear the tops differently without them being dull or how I would typically wear them? I decided to wear the leotard and layer it with the top. In order to add interest I wore the top backwards so that the detailing could really shine. I like how this one turned out. I could see myself running errands on the weekend in this outfit.

Ooolala, my last outfit! I am not going to lie, I got so caught up in taking the pictures that I initially only styled four outfits - whoops! (The pile of clothes don't count). Realizing my mistake I panicked, how on earth could I make another outfit?! Then it hit me, convert the skirt to a tube top, and viola! I took the back in a bit with some safety pins to give it shape and I really like the outcome. This flirty outfit would be perfect for a friday date night.

Phew, I made it! While this challenge took a bit of time to get the hang of, after a few outfits it came pretty easy. I love that I have five new outfits that I would have never thought to wear before this challenge. I need to try to think outside of the box more often, and I suggest you all do the same.

Heart Shaped Three Cheese Ravioli Recipe!

I used Bob's Red Mill semolina flour, and it had a recipe for pasta on the back. I found it was tasty and had just the right texture. I didn't have a recipe for the filling, but I found that having a mixture that was wet and lumpy was perfect. I made the sauce from scratch too. Not to toot my own horn, but this was probably the best meal I've ever made, and I've made quite a few great meals! The sauce was delicious, and the recipe for it is all the way at the bottom of this post :] Also, this was supposed to be a four cheese ravioli, but my dad ate the piece of asiago I had intended for this! Three cheeses is still delicious though!

Here's what you'll need:

I cut my dough into four pieces so that it would be easier to roll.

Make sure you roll it fairly thin, or else you'll end up with hard pasta!

I moved the little ball of filling towards the center so there would be a little pasta around the outside to seal it later.

Pinch the edges with a fork to seal the mixture in. Pop these into boiling salted water and when they float to the top, they're done!

Finished product . You can find the recipe for the sauce below!

Pasta Sauce Recipe
1 yellow onion, diced
2 shallots, diced
7 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely chopped
2 celery stalks, finely chopped
1/2 cup red wine (I used Malbec)
2 boxes of strained tomatoes (Pomi brand)
4oz container of Boar's Head Pancetta
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 tablespoon dried fennel seeds
1 tablespoon oregano
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
Salt to taste
Fresh basil

In a large pot, over medium high heat, crisp the pancetta. With a slotted spoon, remove the bits of pancetta, but leave the fat in the pot. Add onion and cook until it's translucent and slightly brown. Add carrots, celery, garlic, and shallots. Once they're all cooked, add red wine and the strained tomatoes. Stir in the sugar, fennel, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Salt it to taste and let it simmer on low heat for 2 hours. (it'll still be delicious if you decide to simmer it for less time, but I find that the longer it cooks, the better it tastes!) Sprinkle fresh basil before serving.

The Websites You Have Come to Fear the Most

I spent the better part of today asleep. When I actually woke up, I just felt the urge to look over some old livejournal posts from about 5-6 years ago. I can't believe I was ever that pathetic. I wasn't sure if I should laugh at myself or bury my head in shame. Either way, I dug up this old poem about a car accident I had been in. I still kind of like it.

crash,crash soup!
time goes fast and slow

like the bow at the end of a show

revel in the endless seconds

welcome in the scars

it's obvious; you can't stop

it's written in the stars

spin,swing, sing

sudden bursts of blue

those clouds are burning you

sing, sing, sing

let those high notes ring

hoarse and raw

a sudden thaw-

as your chest rapidly rises and falls

millions of peices- shoes have left your feet

and suddenly you find
you're trembling in the seat.

spin, swing, sing,

breathing in the smoke

spin, swing, sing

all the windows broke

spin...

swing...

sing...

I've been busy making heart shaped lemon shortbread cookies and raspberry rose macarons for Mark and my best friend Yvy! Spent all night baking, and that was probably very unwise because I have a huge organic chemistry test tomorrow! This won't be a very long post at all, but I'll share a little how to later on for my heart shaped ravioli. Gotta go study my brains out now. I'm so nervous/scared about this test! Wish me luck, and send me good vibes pretty please <3

I Will Always Love you...

The outpouring of love that goes out to people once they are gone is both moving and by the same token sickening. Yes, I'm referring a bit to Whitney Houston's passing, but this is actually something I've thought of whenever anyone I have known or known of has died. Did it ever occur to anyone that perhaps if she had felt this tremendous love in life, that maybe she would never have thrown herself into the abyss we found her corpse in? Same goes for Michael Jackson. In life, he was the butt of every pedophile joke you could possibly think of; but all he had to do was die in order for people to give him the love he craved so much. These people abused drugs to fill the grand gaping holes left in their hearts from the smoky haze that was once limelight. Why do we do this? Why do we only realize just how much something means to us once it's gone? Obviously, it's not just celebrities. This happens to us with the people in our every day life as well. "I'll always love you" is something we all say or at least think at one point in our lives. But are words like "always" and "forever" things that should even be uttered by us mortals? They are units of time which we will never really comprehend. Our forevers are fickle and are more accurately replaced by "until my life has ended, but I have no idea how long that will be". However, saying all of that would be infinitely less romantic and much harder to incorporate into songs and poetry. The lesson here is to appreciate every day, and all of the people who touch our lives somehow. You shouldn't take your friends and family for granted. You'll only regret it. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Tell the people you love how you feel, you'll both be happier for it.

Colors used:
Pale Pink: Minimalistic
Bright Pink: Watermelon
Red: Pepperoni

This is what I entertained myself with today during my little study breaks. You can see my chemistry book in the background haha! I saw a picture on tumblr for nails similar to this, but I wanted to make them a little bit different. I used a pale pink instead of a white base and I made my hearts a bit bigger. Personally, I love hearts and will probably do this again in other colors (or these as I loved the combination!) throughout the year!

*The trick with the hearts is to make little v's and then you can round them a bit more with the bent toothpick if you like. I showed you how to do it on cardboard because I didn't have anyone to take pictures for me!

Valentine's day is creeping close, hiding in the shadows of next week. I've been hard at work making homemade cards and figuring out a menu for a nice dinner I'm planning for Mark (homemade heart-shaped four cheese ravioli in case you were wondering!) I haven't always been this way. In fact, even though I've been with the love of my life for three happy years, this is the first year we're even celebrating it. I used to hate it. I had a chronic case of the bitter-itis and artificial sweeteners weren't going to cut it. When I was little, my mom never let me play outside with the other kids in the neighborhood.  I didn't mind, I was happy to stay in my room playing with dolls, making forts, and reenacting my favorite parts of my favorite movies. I used to make myself costumes made of paper for these little plays. I'd spend hours and hours taping together a dress or a mermaid's tail, wings made of aluminum foil- it didn't matter.
It wasn't until my first day of school that I realized I had no idea how to make friends. I was too shy to talk to the other kids. I didn't know what other children liked to do and I wasn't familiar with any of the games they liked to play. They noticed, of course, although I hoped I could get by without them even seeing me. We all introduced ourselves. We were asked our favorite colors. All the boys said blue. Almost every girl said pink; except for me. My favorite color at the time was yellow. When I was little I wasn't particularly fond of pink. There was an audible collective gasp. I was automatically an outcast. They made fun of me, called me names, told me I was weird. I never tried to make them like me. I just didn't know how.
When Valentine's day rolled around, we all brought our little punch out valentines with pictures of cartoons on them. We got up in groups of three to pass them out. I watched each of my classmates get closer and closer to my desk. I closed my eyes, too nervous to look and see if I'd actually get a valentine. I didn't. I had been skipped. Maybe it was a mistake. I didn't say anything. Nope. The majority of my classmates skipped me. There was a small group that didn't skip me, and that made me feel better, but I still felt so unloved and alone. We were only five! I was too petrified to even speak to these children, why did they hate me so much? The Valentines' Days to follow were no better. They just progressed from being skipped out of a few Hershey's Kisses to being skipped when it came to real kisses. I'll spare you all the heartbreaking details of the failed romances of my high school life haha. Suffice it to say that I've got a starfish heart. You can chop it up, but it'll always grow back good as new.
Anyway, I wanted to make this Valentine's day really special and festive because I've missed out so much over the years. The truth of the matter is, now pink is one of my favorite colors, I love anything heart shaped, and chocolate is a food group in my book. Therefore, there is no logical reason for me to hate this holiday.
Sorry for such a lengthy post today! I suppose this is my long way of saying, expect some more Valentine's day related posts for the next few days!

We all have those items in our closets that we don't wear because we are punishing ourselves in some way. "I won't wear that unless I'm five (or more) pounds lighter." "I can only wear that on special occasions" "I can't wear that often because it's too expensive and I don't want to ruin it" These are typical excuses; the kinds of excuses I myself am guilty of. Not anymore! You only live once after all, and no matter what age you are; tomorrow isn't guaranteed. You are beautiful now. You deserve to wear your best whenever you feel like wearing it. If it's expensive, then you deserve to have it pressed to your delicate skin. Don't make anymore excuses, beautiful girl. Love yourself the way you deserve to be loved- unconditionally and whole heartedly. What occasion could be more special than just today? Absolutely none. Sorry to be all "I am Woman, Hear Me Roar" on you right now, but it's just how I'm feeling today. I hope you've gathered a bit of the positive energy I'm sending you right now<3

Easy Beach Waves Hair Tutorial

Last night I dried my hair straight again, and I like to put it in a bun while it's still hot so that it doesn't dry stick straight. I like a slight wave in my hair. This morning however, I woke up with stick straight hair that was sad and full of static. It stuck to my face and everything. I was about to run a dryer sheet through it (which works by the way!), when I decided to try something new. I ended up with probably the best hair day I've ever had with perfectly soft waves that I have been lusting over for years, but never able to achieve! I made this little video to show you how I did that :] Also, you can do this no matter where you are since these items are travel friendly! I think it's a great solution to having great hair on vacations where things never turn out the way they do at home because you're missing products or too tired to bother with your hair when you finally get a rest.
